CORRUPTION IS HOLDING UP CROATIA’S EU ACCESSION, SAY OFFICIAL REPORTS

NEGOTIATIONS designed to lead to Croatia joining the European Union (EU) are being held up by concerns that its government is failing to sufficiently tackle corruption problems, say assessments from European Commission and the European Parliament. Its representative on the issue Austrian Socialist MEP Hannes Swoboda has warned this could delay Croatian accession beyond 2011. This follows a Commission report claiming "corruption remains widespread" in Croatia.
