EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT VOTES THROUGH MERCURY BANS

THE EUROPEAN Parliament has approved an import ban on mercury and tough restrictions on using this toxic metal, aimed at preventing its spread in the environment - particularly in water, where it bioaccumulates in fish and then humans. The import ban will start on December 1, 2010, and will also cover products containing mercury, such as barometers and thermometers, whose manufacture with mercury will also banned within the European Union. There will also be an import ban in some mercury compounds (such as cinnabar ore and calomel).
