EU BACKS SEAFOOD IMPORT QUOTAS

THE EUROPEAN Commission has unveiled plans to create three-year duty free or low duty trade quotas that will encourage imports into the European Union (EU) of seafood where Brussels thinks supplies from EU fleets are to scarce. These include annual quotas of 20,000 tonnes 6% duty for duty shrimp and prawns; 1,500 tonnes at 6% for frozen rock lobster and other sea crawfish; 45,000 tonnes of squid tubes duty free; and 55,000 tonnes of frozen surimi for processing - also duty free.
