EU APPROVES ALIEN SPECIES LICENCE SYSTEM

BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EUROPEAN Union (EU) Council of Ministers has approved a new EU-wide licensing system for EU fish farmers wanting to introduce new non-European species into their ponds and pools. Regulated by member states, this system of permits is designed to allow the aquaculture industry to introduce species where there is a low risk of ecological problems should they escape, while tightly controlling or blocking the introduction of higher risk species.
