EU SHOE DUTY DEADLINE LOOMS – ELEVENTH HOUR COUNCIL MEETING
September 1st, 2006
BY KEITH NUTHALL
EUROPEAN Union (EU) retailers may next week regain unlimited sources of cheap Chinese and Vietnamese leather shoes, with a deadline looming for EU ministers to agree permanent (definitive) anti-dumping duties. Northern European member states have so far blocked duties sufficiently tough to satisfy southern European countries seeking to protect their shoe manufacturers. The EU Council of Ministers must replace existing provisional duties by October 6, or they will lapse. A last minute EU council discusses the issue October 5.
