THE COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruption to Peru’s important camelid fibre sectors. Its large alpaca fibre and fabric industry has suffered, but there is maybe more concern about the impact on the smaller and more vulnerable vicuña industry.
Peru is the leading producer worldwide of vicuña. Out of the 12 tonnes of wool that can be spun into yarn annually globally, 10 tonnes came from Peru, according to the country’s ministry of agrarian development and irrigation, during 2019 (most recent data available).
